Gramercy Group Celebrates Ribbon Cutting at Metropolitan Hospital’s New Floodwall

Gramercy Group is proud to celebrate the successful completion of another major resiliency project for New York City. On December 3, 2024, the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and NYC Health + Hospitals officially held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new flood protection system at Metropolitan Hospital in East Harlem.

As a subcontractor to Gilbane Building Company on behalf of NYCEDC, Gramercy Group was honored to play an important role in delivering this critical infrastructure project. The completed floodwall will help protect one of New York City's essential healthcare facilities from future coastal flooding while ensuring uninterrupted medical services for the surrounding community.

Lessons Learned from Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy exposed the vulnerability of New York City's healthcare infrastructure when it struck in 2012. Metropolitan Hospital, located just blocks from the East River, experienced significant flooding impacts while continuing to provide lifesaving care throughout the emergency.

The experience demonstrated that temporary repairs were not enough. Long-term resilience required permanent flood protection capable of defending the hospital campus against increasingly severe storms.

Building for Long-Term Resilience

The Metropolitan Hospital Floodwall Resiliency Project was designed to protect a 360,000-square-foot campus spanning four city blocks. Approximately 1,800 linear feet of floodwall now surrounds the property, providing a strong perimeter defense against coastal flooding and storm surge.

Standing between eight and twelve feet high and anchored by deep structural foundations extending roughly forty-five feet underground, the system has been engineered to withstand an extreme one-in-500-year storm event while maintaining everyday access through deployable floodgates.

The project protects critical healthcare infrastructure without disrupting the hospital's daily operations or accessibility.

Gramercy Group's Contribution

Gramercy Group's scope focused on furnishing and installing the deployable flood barrier systems positioned around the hospital campus. Our experienced team completed precision stainless-steel welding, structural bolting, equipment installation, and extensive performance testing to verify that every flood barrier met demanding quality and safety standards.

In addition, architectural enclosures were installed to seamlessly conceal the flood barriers during normal operations while allowing them to be quickly deployed whenever severe weather threatens the facility.

More Than Just a Floodwall

The resiliency project extended well beyond the flood protection system itself. Additional improvements included upgraded stormwater detention systems, underground utility infrastructure, hardened building walls, enhanced fire protection, improved security systems, and beautifully landscaped public spaces that create a more welcoming environment for patients and visitors alike.

Throughout construction, Metropolitan Hospital remained fully operational, allowing healthcare professionals to continue serving the community while these critical upgrades were completed with minimal disruption.
